Animation is amazing and the story is certainly interesting. However, I wished that the side characters had more room to breath and develop as in the end they felt a little flat in parts. Despite that fact, this was still a wonderful watch. 7/10

I'm a fan of Mr. Henry Selick. I follow creepy animated movies subgenre thoroughly. I'm sad to report that this movie was uneven and average. Story was disjointed despite being modestly inspired. At least characters were ok. Animation was respectable and stylish but a bit simplistic compared to Selick's earlier works. Some backgrounds having too little work on them constantly reminded me that this movie is direct to tv stuff. Jokes are too few and far in between. A lot of things and situations go around the movie despite most of them are not fleshed out. Don't hold back if you really want to see it. It is ok. But go with low expectations. You may opt out for a better movie if you are a casual movie goer.

Stop motion is such a time consuming endeavor. It makes it all the more painful when the plot doesn't live up to the visuals. Simply put, this movie doesn't know what it wants to be. We are given multiple plot threads and ideas, but none of them are ever fleshed out enough to feel compelling. We're never given the proper amount of time to digest, it's just onto the next. The entire "Hell Maiden" concept is completely brushed past in order to make way for a private prison plot point which is hardly engaging. Wendell and Wild, barely even interact with Kat during the film when you really think about it- they're too busy dealing with the OTHER plot point of Father Best trying to appease the Klaxon's in order to keep his school. We just establish that the one nun, and one janitor know EVERYTHING about demons and move on. So, why would the nun move the bear to a class where it might end up in student hands, if she knows demons are so tricky and evil? Evil- being a funny word here since Wendell and Wild don't actually do anything bad in the film- hell, when they descend upon Raul they just... put him behind an easily escapable open cage. Manberg even gives back the demons, no problem. We get some really half baked morals tossed in the last 5 minutes, and that's it. What are the stakes here exactly? Was I really supposed to care about a dead town with a total of 5 residents? The lack of focus leaves a film that feels unpolished and rough. Not even the awesome animation and unique character designs could save it. 5/10.

The animation is actually stunning. I found myself being throughly engaged just from the animation alone. The representation was also refreshing. However, there is far too much going on. The plot tries to do too much which means no one character is developed enough. Wendell and wild are hardly seen during this film which is strange, considering that the film is named after them. If this film must be remade, I would recommend trying to reign in the character focus. I feel like in an attempt to make this film representative and inclusive as possible, it fails to properly aline it's story. Still worth a watch just for the animation.

I would say to all people who have read this review to watch it. It is a beautiful midly scary movie definitely can compete with corilane and the nightmare before Christmas. And some of the drama is perfectly portraited and the score is brilliant my only problem is people calling it a let down but i assure you it looks and sounds amazing and it's characters. Very little charm, not scary or creepy, and lacking any heart. This was wholly disappointing. I had trouble connecting with any of the characters, although I tried my best to! Kat, the movie's protagonist and an orphan, should've been SO much more sympathetic than she was. Even the titular characters Wendall & Wild were pretty one-dimensional. The story lines also felt very jarring and disjointed. The only thing keeping me engaged was the stop motion and the occasional laugh, but even that wasn't enough to make me care. There's something seriously wrong with this movie. It should've been amazing, but ultimately, there's no magic to be had here.
